{"id":26548,"date":"2020-01-16T11:12:34","date_gmt":"2020-01-16T16:12:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/?p=26548"},"modified":"2020-11-11T19:20:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-12T01:20:03","slug":"chicagos-civil-rights-leaders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/chicagos-civil-rights-leaders\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Popular Civil Rights Leaders From Chicago"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we take this day to commemorate, celebrate and reflect upon the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., we are given the opportunity to do the same of those activists who proceeded, mirrored and protracted his message.<\/p>\n<p>And though we at UrbanMatter are by no means historians, we could think of no better way to do just that than by taking a moment to remember some of our city&#8217;s own activists, both past and present.<\/p>\n<p>So if you, like so many of us, could use a little refresher on this MLK Day 2020, here&#8217;s a look at just a few of Chicago&#8217;s civil rights leaders.<\/p>\n<h2>Albert Raby<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26568\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26568\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26568\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1-ZZebt0wmJpAC_GC8lMgKig.gif\" alt=\"Chicago's Civil Rights Leaders\" width=\"400\" height=\"289\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26568\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@alisonraby\/dr-martin-luther-king-jr-r-confers-with-albert-raby-chicago-civil-rights-leader-and-head-of-be8160b181dd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Medium<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A former Chicago public school teacher, Al Raby <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1988\/11\/25\/obituaries\/albert-raby-civil-rights-leader-in-chicago-with-king-dies-at-55.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">worked tirelessly<\/a> to bring Dr. King \u2013 and the Southern Civil Rights Movement \u2013 to Chicago in 1966. This activist was instrumental in the fight against school segregation and housing inequality, fights which still continue to this day. A founding member of the Teachers for Integrated Schools, the Coordinating Council for Community Organizations, and an active member of the Peace Corps, Raby dedicated his life to enacting real change at the heart of Chicago. The artist, entertainer, civil rights activist, and native Chicagoan is shedding light on her hometown like never before in her new Showtime series <em>The Chi,\u00a0<\/em>which she both created AND wrote, in case you were wondering. An avid supporter of the <em>Time&#8217;s Up<\/em> movement and constant defender of women&#8217;s \u2013 and specifically both queer and black women&#8217;s \u2013 \u00a0rights Lena Waithe is bringing Chicago activism to the national stage, and we couldn&#8217;t be more excited.<\/p>\n<h2>Rev. Chosen by Dr. King to head the Chicago branch of Operation Breadbasket, Rev. Jackson went on to play a central role in the continued fight for civil rights, gender equality and socio-economic equality on both the local and national level. Included among its long list of founding members are George Houser, James L Farmer Jr., James R. Robinson, Samuel E. Riley, Bernice Fisher, Joe Guinn, and Homer Jack, who all went on to become influential civil rights leaders.\u00a0CORE was a sponsor of the Freedom Rides, the Freedom Summer project as well as the March on Washington in 1963.<\/p>\n<h2>Eva Lewis<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26572\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26572\" style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-26572\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Eva-Lewis-Online-1024x683.png\" alt=\"Chicago's Civil Rights Leaders\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Eva-Lewis-Online-1024x683.png 1024w, https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Eva-Lewis-Online-1024x683-600x400.png 600w, https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Eva-Lewis-Online-1024x683-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Eva-Lewis-Online-1024x683-128x86.png 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26572\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfw.org\/eva-lewis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CFW<\/a><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At just 18, Eva Lewis is the co-founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/youth4blklives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Youth for Black Lives<\/a>\u00a0(an organization dedicated to validating the voices of young black people within the BLM movement), a community organizer in the Southside of Chicago and a contributing writer for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cfw.org\/eva-lewis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teen Vogue<\/a>. Committed to empowering black women and girls, Eva is also the founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.itstheiproject.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The I Project<\/a> \u2013 a city-wide initiative which aims to amplify Chicago youth through activist art. A lawyer, politician, and civil rights leader, Moseley Braun has dedicated much of her life to the fight for civil and equal rights.
