First Ferris wheel<\/h3>\n

For starters, the father of Navy Pier\u2019s own Ferris wheel was the original wheel that was first introduced in 1893.\u00a0Designed by George Washington Gale Ferris Jr., the Chicago Wheel was more than 260-feet tall.<\/a>\u00a0Unfortunately, the aging wheel was later demolished after 13 years of operation in 1906.\u00a0Its legacy still lives, albeit by its much shorter son, in Navy Pier.<\/p>\n

Before the TV came along, radio was all the rage.\u00a0According to \u201cRobertson\u2019s Book of Firsts,\u201d the first radio drama was \u201cThe Smiths,\u201d debuting in 1929.\u00a0The series portrayed an upper-crust family lifestyle, with notable voices from vaudeville team Jim and Marion Jordan.<\/p>\n

First commercial movie theater<\/h3>\n

Science and entertainment meshed together in Chicago, where the first theater was born.\u00a0The keyword is science since Eadweard Muybridge was the catalyst.<\/a>\u00a0His photography and study of animal locomotion were first screened at the Zoopraxographical Hall.\u00a0People paid for entry to\u00a0view these moving pictures at the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Hyde Park.\u00a0Thus, the first movie theater was born.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Father of the Twinkie was James Dewar<\/a>, who had his bakery\u2019s shortbread cake injected with banana-cream filling.\u00a0They were, of course, an instant success, and has made Hostess quite the popular baking company.\u00a0Unfortunately, the Schiller Park bakery, birthplace of the Twinkie, closed in 2014.<\/a>\u00a0However, the Twinkie still lives and Chicago is the place to thank.<\/p>\n

First Playboy Mansion<\/h3>\n

Every company has its glory days, and the first Playboy Mansion docked in the Midwest in 1959.<\/a>\u00a0Located in the historic Gold Coast, Hugh Hefner once resided there during the sexual revolution of the 1960s.\u00a0In fact, Hefner started the first publication of Playboy in Chicago in 1953.\u00a0Currently, the mansion is on the market for more than $3 million.<\/a><\/p>\n

First all-color television station<\/h3>\n

WMAQ-TV, or NBC 5 Chicago, would provide all-color in 1956.\u00a0Remembered as \u201cC-Day,\u201d<\/a> the stations carried their broadcast over 110 affiliated stations across the country.\u00a0With this, they ushered in a new era of color in media.<\/p>\n

First automobile race<\/h3>\n

There’s always a starting line, and that of the\u00a0first automobile race<\/a> was in Chicago.\u00a0Sponsored by the Chicago Times-Herald in 1895, the race was between six motorized vehicles.\u00a0With a prize of $2,000, the 54-mile route went from Chicago to Evanston, then back.\u00a0From the six, Charles Duryea won with his motor wagon.\u00a0With luck on his side, much of Duryea’s competition was left in the dust.<\/p>\n

First blood bank<\/h3>\n

As faith would have it, the first blood bank<\/a> was established in the Cook County Hospital in Chicago.\u00a0Bernard Fantus coined the term and established the first blood bank in 1937.\u00a0Throughout its first year, the blood bank carried out 1,354 transfusions.<\/p>\n

First televised U.S. Presidential debate<\/h3>\n

CBS\u2019 Chicago studios were the location of the first televised presidential debate.<\/a>\u00a0As history would have it, the debate was between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.\u00a0To this day, it has been considered by many to be an iconic moment in American history.<\/p>\n

First man-made nuclear chain reactions<\/h3>\n

First city to make reparations to victims of police violence<\/h3>\n

First non-segregated hospital in U.S.<\/h3>\n
