The annual Chicago River dyeing is a celebrated tradition to commemorate St. Patrick\u2019s Day that&#8217;s recognized throughout the nation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_41055\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-41055\" style=\"width: 200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-41055\" src=\"https:\/\/urbanmatter.com\/chicago\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/emma-horath-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Emma Horath\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-41055\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Photo credit: Emma Horath<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p id=\"arIndex_1\">While numerous cities have tried to master their own green rivers, nothing compares to Chicago\u2019s.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_2\">There are families who take that tradition one step further and pass down the ritual of dyeing the river from generation to generation. The Chicago River dyeing is conducted by the Rowan and Butler families within the Chicago Journeymen Plumbers Local 130.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_3\">Jimmy Horath has been a part of the tradition since 1993 after marrying into the family.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_4\">\u201cIt\u2019s been a family tradition. Horath explained tradition plays a large role in the atmosphere of the crowd.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_6\">\u201cAs soon as we start, they\u2019ll be screaming. It\u2019s like being at a rock concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_7\">The almost undescribed mass of onlookers is unlike anything else.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_8\">\u201cPretty much like you just hit a homerun at Sox park or you just walked on stage with Garth Brooks,\u201d Horath described the scene from the boat.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_9\">Although he wouldn\u2019t share the secret formula they pour into the river he guarantees it\u2019s completely safe and referred to it as \u201cLeprechaun Dust.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_10\">Although when the dye is first poured, it appears as a bright orange and yellow as it hits the river, but don\u2019t be fooled, seconds later the river is a lime green that can last anywhere from five hours to four days.<\/p>\n<p id=\"arIndex_11\">If you&#8217;ve never celebrated St. Patrick&#8217;s Day in Chicago, make sure to get yourself a spot along the river to see this special sea of lime green.
