This is huge news for more than a few reasons, none more significant than the fact that it has the potential to be the first book at a professional sports stadium. The Cubs and DraftKings aren&#8217;t thinking small on it either, as they have stated that the intention is to make it the largest individual sportsbook in the entire country.<\/p>\n<p>DraftKings made its introduction in Illinois by opening a book at the Casino Queen in East St. Louis earlier this summer. As for the location at Wrigley, that is unknown. Taking into consideration Wrigleyville&#8217;s overhaul, one possible spot would be in Gallagher Way. However, the new editions to Clark St. have made conscious efforts to be family-friendly and primarily designed for patrons with game tickets.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Crane Kenney on <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/670TheScore?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@670TheScore<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt&#39;ll be on campus.<\/p>\n<p>With the construction of our office tower, we have retail spaces on the 1st and 2nd levels. The southeast corner of Addison and Sheffield used to be home to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.draftkingswrigley.com\/\">DraftKings Sports Zone<\/a> (Captain Morgan club) and makes a lot of sense, as well. No matter where the book is located on-site, there will be a slew of regulatory speed bumps to clear before anything transpires. Photo Credit: FourSquare<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It&#8217;s important to note that the Ricketts family will not own the sports book itself. For obvious reasons, that would be an extreme conflict of interest. However, a partnership between the organization and the sportsbook operator is well within the boundaries of what&#8217;s allowed and gives the Cubs another robust source of revenue. Considering the Cubs time and time again tell its fans how broke they are, this is $100M we all welcome with open arms.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, DraftKings founder Matt Kalish <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/chalk\/story\/_\/id\/29799840\/cubs-announce-plans-sportsbook-wrigley-field\">told ESPN<\/a>, &#8220;It might be the Cubs to win, maybe a few props like first home run, then stroll into the game at 6:45, sit down, sweat my bets and cheer on the Cubs. Then, after the game I can stop back at the DraftKings book, relax with my friends, get some food and drink and think about the next day\u2019s game, maybe put in a few more tickets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Can you imagine the hoards of drunken Wrigley Rats after a day of drinking on Clark stumbling over to the book to place a night&#8217;s worth of bets? It&#8217;s going to be madness. Forget having a ticket to the game and betting solely on a Javier Baez HR prop, any 24-year-old post-grad with an early-onset gambling addiction who lives on Grace St. can take 12 steps and lay a paycheck on whatever they want. This is huge news no matter what angle you approach it from.<\/p>\n<p>You can currently register for the <a href=\"https:\/\/sportsbook.draftkings.com\/il-sports-betting\">DraftKings sportsbook online<\/a> and begin betting there without having to verify your account in person so long as you&#8217;re within Illinois state limits.<\/p>\n<h2>UPDATE (8\/5)<\/h2>\n<p>The Chicago Cubs went before City Council and the Commission on Chicago Landmarks today to present its plans for a 22,000-plus-square-foot, two-story sportsbook addition to Wrigley Field. As we reported back in September, the Cubs and DraftKings went into agreement to add an on-side betting facility to the corner of Sheffield and Addison at iconic Wrigley Field, the next steps in that plan went into action today.<\/p>\n<p>As exciting as these new developments are there are still major roadblocks to overcome. Not only would the Cubs need approval from the landmarks committee, they&#8217;d need the City Council to pass through an ordinance that has previously been shot down multiple times that allows betting inside the city&#8217;s major stadiums. Additionally, there is no casino or sportsbook currently operating within city limits.<\/p>\n<p>Per <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/commercial-real-estate\/cubs-unveil-plans-wrigley-field-sportsbook\">Crain&#8217;s Chicago Business<\/a><em>, &#8220;Ald. Walter Burnett (27th)\u00a0<a class=\"omnitrack inline-paragraph-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagobusiness.com\/government\/chicago-stadium-sports-betting-takes-step-forward\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-omnilocation=\"articlebody\" data-omnilink=\"editorial-link\">introduced such an ordinance<\/a> last month, but the proposal was sent to the Council&#8217;s Rules Committee, which could stall its consideration. The ordinance isn&#8217;t without controversy, as some aldermen are concerned that sportsbooks at pro sports venues including Wrigley Field and the United Center could cannibalize spending at a future Chicago casino, something the city is counting on as a vital new revenue source&#8230;Under Burnett\u2019s proposal, the city would get annual licensing fees from sportsbook operators\u2014$50,000 for the first year and $25,000 per year after that\u2014and a portion of gambling revenue would go to the state.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The proposed on-site sportsbook would be legendary and truly a first of its kind. Something like this would provide the team even more money to their annual bottom line, hopefully eliminating situations like last week where the entire 2016 World Series core was shipped off at the trade deadline.<\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ll keep you updated with everything you need to know about the Chicago Cubs and DraftKings Sportsbook development as they happen.<\/p>\n<p>At UrbanMatter, U Matter.
