Limited Time Floating Cinema Is Making Waves in Austin

Social distancing… movies… and free popcorn all in one place?! Just when we thought Austin could not get any better, any weirder, any weirdly better (yes, this is a thing), in comes the “social-distancing friendly” Floating Cinema!

It is no secret that, due to COVID-19, we have seen the popularity of drive-in theaters making an incredible comeback as a safe way to enjoy entertainment amid the current pandemic. If you are both a fan of the many beautiful lakes around the city, floating the river, and you can recite the entire 2020 Oscar nomination list, then this is a triple win for us all, my friends!

Austin is known to be the heart of the world’s largest film festival in the world and home to thousands of movie fanatics, and now Beyond Cinema, an Australian entertainment and event company, has found a fun way to bring us together for a drive-in experience of a lifetime with a super exciting twist! The group will be coming to various major U.S. cities and is expected to float into Austin in September. The 1-week drive-in event is set to begin Wednesday, September 23rd, 2020, and will run for one week only. Here’s what we can expect this fall.

Classic Films and New Releases

Not only will the 1-week event include some of the latest releases, we can also expect to see some of our favorite classics! Though the titles and genres of said classics and latest releases have not been named yet, we are excited for the opportunity to choose between nostalgic oldies and more recent flicks. What films do you hope to make the list?

Free Popcorn

Yes, free. As if this amazing event doesn’t already have us bowing down to “Austin Event Gods” already, we’re then blessed with free, salty, buttery popcorn. Are you drooling already? We are. The event is also expected to serve other traditional snacks and refreshments for those who prefer something a little different. There is always the option to bring your own homemade snacks as well to enjoy as you watch the big screen. Either way, we’re here for it!

Party of 8 Please

While the location for the highly anticipated event will not be disclosed until tickets go on sale, those interested can pre-register for the latest updates. With 12-24 mini boats maximum, allowing up to eight people, this event stays in compliance with local and state social distancing guidelines of Texas, who recently increased fines up to $250 for those who are not in compliance. Those indulging in this event will be required to purchase rental reservations for the entire boat to enforce safety and ensure that participants are seated with family and friends. This makes for a great way to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries safely with those closest to you.
