7 Austin Stereotypes That are Definitely NOT True

Last time we took a look at totally true Austin stereotypes about people. But of course, not all stereotypes are. Outside of Austin, you’ll have definitely heard these claims and while they might seem true, we’re here to say – “Y’all aren’t right about these ones.”

We Don’t All Love the Heat

There are some rare Austinites that live for summer and absolutely thrive in that 100 degree plus weather. That’s not the majority by any means. Every year we look forward to summer, and then regret everything. The Texas heat makes most of us question why we live here, but then we cool off with some ice cream and remember it’s because Austin is awesome.

Not Everyone is in Tech

It’s true, Austin has a massive tech industry. But that doesn’t mean that’s what we all do. Here you’ll find culinary masters, artists of all kinds, writers, designers, and so much more!

Not Just Musicians Either

We may be the live music capital, but not all of our art comes from music. There are so many incredible artists, actors, and writers that live and work in Austin. You can catch them at local theaters like ZACH Scott or art galleries like Link & Pin

No Texas Accent

In Austin, it is much harder to find the Texas accent many know from the movies. In fact, the majority of us Austinites don’t have an accent at all. Though we do all say “y’all,” that’s a must.

We Don’t All Ride Horses

Countless times Texans have been asked if we ride our horses to school. Despite endlessly responding that we’re from Austin, (so no), there’s a look of incredulity as if the asker’s whole life has been a lie. That’s not to say some of us would ride our horses to school if we could, but they’d be getting the strange looks.

Not Everyone Dresses like a Cowboy

There are plenty of places to get some great western gear – boots, hats, belts – but most of us don’t dress like that too often. You’ll see it around, and you’ll definitely see people in boots, but it’s really only a small part of Austin fashion.

We Don’t All Swim in Barton Springs Year-Round

It’s true that Barton Springs keeps a consistent temperature of 70 degrees year-round, but most Austinites wouldn’t set foot in it in winter. Though if you stop by, you’ll definitely see a small crowd there – don’t worry – we also think they’re nuts.
