Allison Williams: “I really, really get it” — Why some people root against her
During the promotional activities for Regretting You, the 37-year-old actress explains that her “theater kid” persona and privilege layers are the reasons for the backlash.
The reason for Williams is a double one. “Firstly, the theater kid energy is something a lot of people find very provoking. That’s why I don’t sing very often,” she remarked. “I can do it once in a ten years without it becoming too irritating.”
“Secondly, I am covered with so many layers of privilege that it is difficult for me to conceive of a person whom it would be less enjoyable to support. I am more of a character who is against to be supported and it is more satisfying,” she complemented. “I really understand it. I really, really understand it.”
Allison Williams on her love-to-hate persona and evolving audience views
From Marnie in Girls to a villain in Get Out, Williams says she understands — and notices Gen Z’s kinder take
Williams was well-known for her role as Marnie in HBO’s Girls, the self‑centered and painfully awkward character, which was one of the most talked‑about moments of the show when Marnie sings Kanye West’s “Stronger.” She was one of the villains in Jordan Peele’s 2017 horror film Get Out where she again used that polarizing persona.
The actress — a daughter of former NBC anchor Brian Williams and producer Jane Stoddard‑Williams — called The New York Times and said that she still thinks about what people say but “cannot hold it against people their reactions.” She also said that the perception of people has changed: “Gen Z has a completely different understanding of Marnie. They feel much more affectionate and loving towards her.”
Allison Williams on Regretting You: a nostalgic family drama after horror and Marnie
Williams stars with McKenna Grace, Dave Franco and Mason Thames in the Colleen Hoover adaptation about grief, family and healing
Allison Williams is the lead in Regretting You as Morgan, alongside McKenna Grace (Clara), Dave Franco (Jonah) and Mason Thames. The film is a screen adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s 2019 novel. After a car accident that kills Clara’s father and Morgan’s sister, a mother, her daughter, and the daughter’s uncle become the characters to rebuild the film depicts. “It felt nostalgic to me, like the kind of movie that used to just fill the shelves of Blockbuster,” Williams was telling The New York Times. She also said her horror work was instrumental in helping her get over the Marnie character: “Obviously, I first had to learn a lot of the lessons I learned from horror, that doing horror somehow helped me get over this Marnie thing which was difficult, etc.”
