He is mainly remembered for his portrayal of stern and strict enforcers of the law characters who eventually became his trademark in motion pictures e.g. the anti-slacker principal in Back to the Future and Tom Cruise’s officer boss in Top Gun. Apart from that, Tolkan still has a pretty long list of film credits including Woody Allen’s Love and Death and Warren Beatty’s Dick Tracy.
He worked with Sidney Lumet in three movies: he was a police officer in Serpico (1973), also with Al Pacino, a demanding D.A. in Prince of the City (1981), and a Family Business (1989) judge. Moreover, Tolkan made his Broadway debut as Dave Moss a crafty salesman in the first production of David Mamet’s Glengarry Glen Ross (1984-85 season).
Being strong and assertive characters was Tolkan’s cup of tea and he performed them splendidly in the 1985 movie Back to the Future as the relentless high school principal Mr. Strickland and its 1989 sequel where he was back as Strickland’s grandfather in Back to the Future Part III (1990). Fans would almost always ask him to scold them as “slackers” for the fun of it wherever he went. Both parents remained an integral part of Miley’s life, growing with her as she handled her career and identity.

One of the strengths in his acting prowess was to portray strict and commanding personalities. His Principal Strickland in Back to the Future was one of the unforgettable characters in the movie which inevitably brings the actor to the mind of the audience. Similarly in Top Gun, as Tom “Stinger” Jardian, he is the one who chastised Maverick (Tom Cruise) for his daredevil behavior.
Besides the two blockbuster movies, his filmography lists roles in The Friends of Eddie Coyle (1973), The Amityville Horror (1979), Wolfen (1981), WarGames (1983), Masters of the Universe (1987), Dick Tracy (1990) and Opportunity Knocks (1990).
Tolkan was born in Calumet, Michigan, on June 20, 1931. He spent his childhood in Chicago and Tucson, Arizona. A stint in the U.S. Navy was followed by his move to New York where he pursued acting studies at The Actors Studio with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.

He gained recognition by portraying strict, commanding characters, such as Principal Strickland in Back to the Future and Tom “Stinger” Jardian in Top Gun, where he scolded Tom Cruise’s Maverick.
Tolkan acted not only in movies but also in television and on stage for many decades. His first film appearance was in 1960 on Naked City and he gradually acted in numerous productions such as The Amityville Horror, WarGames and Dick Tracy. On Broadway, he was in Wait Until Dark, where he took over the part of the villain Harry Roat.
Besides that, he was regularly seen on Remington Steele and A Nero Wolfe Mystery, and made guest appearances on popular series like Miami Vice, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, The Wonder Years, and Leverage.

In the theater, he was cast in the production of Wait Until Dark, taking over the part of the antagonist Harry Roat.
