Both Davidson and Murphy were given their breaks on Saturday Night Live, which became the launching pad that shaped their careers. Knowing the history of the three of them at SNL makes Davidson praise more: he terms Murphy as “insanely talented” and “the G.O.A.T.,” and he says that their relationship is more than just a friendship between a fan and a famous person; it is a personal and professional one.”

Davidson on shared SNL roots and mentorship from Eddie Murphy

Both joined SNL as teenagers; Davidson says their similar upbringings and losses create a rare bond and mentorship
“The really nice thing about Eddie is that we both were among the youngest members of the cast ever,” Davidson says, pointing out that they shared not only personal experiences — like losing their fathers at a young age — but these experiences also helped them to find comedy. He made an additional point that Murphy’s mentorship is very meaningful to him: “I’ve been around a long time in this business… and it’s nice to get advice from people, but no one understands it more than him, just if you look at the age timeline. I’m not in anyway saying that I did the same things as him… but it’s nice to just get advice from someone who literally understands what I’m going through. It was really nice, and I consider myself very fortunate to have had that chance.”
