UrbanMatter’s December Movie Trailer Breakdowns

This past week has been wild with movie trailers. So much so that they need to be packed into one big breakdown so let’s get into!

The Super Mario Bros Movie

After a well-received trailer (apart from Chris Pratt’s voice acting) was released a few weeks ago, Illumination has followed up with a longer trailer showcasing the film’s plot and more characters. As the trailer opens with an orchestral version of the iconic Mario theme, we see him about to face down against Donkey Kong and from there, the trailer gets wild. Bowser is shown interrogating Luigi, voiced by Charlie Day, as to where his brother his after being told of a champion that would defeat him. Based on the context and subsequent attempts to train Mario, he has been sucked into this world from another dimension to defeat Bowser. The trailer seems to pull in many aspects from the beloved Mario video game franchise including Mario Kart as he is shown driving on the Rainbow Road made infamous from the game series. The voice cast also includes Jack Black, Anya Taylor-Joy, Keegan-Michael Key, Seth Rogen and will also feature legendary Mario voice actor Charles Martinet. The film will open in theaters on April 7, 2023

That 90’s Show

This one may have fallen under the radar but a reboot/sequel of the beloved early 2000’s show That 70’s Show will premiere on Netflix titled That 90’s Show. The sitcom will feature the returning cast of the original show including Topher Grace, Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis and Wilmer Valderrama but will not feature Danny Masterson as he is facing sexual assault allegations. Also returning are actors Kurtwood Smith and Debra Jo Rupp as Eric and Donna drop off their daughter to spend her summer at her grandparents in Point Place, WI. There will be a new set of kids that will spend time in the Forman’s basement to enjoy life and become friends. The series will be available on Netflix beginning January 19, 2023

Cocaine Bear

This is without a doubt the oddest entry in this article but the trailer seamlessly blends dark humor, action and horror as the film’s title is elegantly simple. After a drug gang dumps cocaine bricks over a town, a bear somehow eats one of the bricks and begins a rampage unlike any seen in the animal kingdom. The film includes Ray Liotta’s final performance before his tragic passing earlier this year and includes an all-star cast of Keri Russel, O’Shea Jackson Jr., Alden Ehrenreich, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Matthew Rhys as they all get up to various shenanigans during the course of the trailer. The film is inspired by the real-life story of a black bear that did indeed ingest cocaine but the rampage itself is purely fiction but director Elizabeth Banks is hoping to entertain audiences as the film will open in theaters on February 24, 2023.

Transformers: Rise of the Beasts

While you may have thought the Transformers was over, think again. Thanks to the success of Bumblebee in 2018, the series has been rebooted and is getting another entry titled Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and finally introduces the Maximals to the franchise. The Decepticons are not here this time around but Optimus Prime is along with veteran voice actor Peter Cullen along with Ron Perlman, Peter Dinklage, Pete Davidson and Michelle Yeoh all confirmed to be voicing Transformers in the film. While plot details are short to come by, the trailer features several large action pieces such as a car chase in New York and some type of major fight between many Transformers. Another trailer is likely to be released ahead of the film’s scheduled release date of June 9, 2023.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny

The first trailer for the final Indiana Jones movie has arrived and it was a little underwhelming. The trailer opens with Indy speaking to his old friend Salah, who hasn’t been seen since The Last Crusade, reminiscing about the old days and how he still longs for adventure. The plot of the film involves Indy being suspicious of former Nazis working at NASA when he and his goddaughter, played by Phoebe Waller Bridge, go on a globetrotting adventure to save the world. Harrison Ford was noticeably de-aged for several scenes of the trailer and the CGI looks a little suspect during the entire two-minute video but there is still time to work out the kinks. The trademark action from the franchise is on display as well as Harrison Ford’s humor and gravelly voice. There are some snippets of the classic Indiana Jones fanfare from John Williams but it seems like the iconic composer’s regular score is absent from the trailer. Another full-length trailer is sure to be released sometime before the film’s release date of June 20, 2023.

Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3

The end of the road has come for the Guardians as this trailer makes it known almost from the start that something is to befall the Guardians that causes several of them to die or the group to split up at the conclusion of the film. Star Lord is still searching for Gamora who went missing after the events of Avengers: Endgame and the trailer also introduced Adam Warlock portrayed by Will Poulter whose arrival was teased in a post-credit scene for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 but makes his MCU debut here in Volume 3. The trailer seemed to focus heavily on Rocket and the end of his time in the Guardians reminding of a callback from the original film as he remarked that he doesn’t have long of a lifespan compared to everyone else in the group. We will know more about the film and how it fits into the MCU when it releases in theaters on May 5, 2023.
