5 Expert Tips to Explore the Top of the World Highway

Ever wanted to visit the top of the world? You’re in luck: There is such a place, and it winds its way from Alaska through areas of Canada.

This long and twisting highway is called the Top of the World Highway. It’s a once in lifetime trip filled with mountains and breathtaking views. But it’s not for the faint of heart.

While it is considered a highway, a lot of the drive is unpaved mountainous terrain. It’s more than worth the time, but it does take some preparation.

Everything from when you take the trip to the car you drive, and even the Alaska car insurance requirements have to be researched and planned before tackling the Top of the World Highway.

What is the Top of the World Highway?

This highway dates back to the mid-1900s. Documents show that the Top of the World Highway has been around since 1955, but the true date could be even earlier. Even after so many years, it’s still one of the highest roads in Canada and the United States.

The Top of the World Highway is actually a two-part highway. One portion of the highway moves through Alaska. The part that runs through Alaska is called the Top of the World High, or the Taylor Highway.

The second portion, the one that runs through the Yukon territory of Canada, is called the Yukon Highway #9.

The Top of the World Highway is a total of 175 miles in length, and it links Dawson City in the Yukon to Tetlin Junction in Alaska. It is mostly traveled by people moving between Fairbanks, Alaska, and Dawson City in the Yukon.

But this highway can be dangerous. The weather in this weather can be severe and unpredictable. To help mitigate some of the danger, the Top of the World Highway is only open for 9 months between mid-May to mid-October.

That doesn’t mean that the weather always holds out for the mid-October close date. The Top of the World Highway has been known to close before that end date because of an early snowstorm.

The beauty of the Top of the World Highway is just that, the beauty and scenic views it offers any traveler. But it doesn’t just have to be a travel route. The Top of the World Highway is also a popular camping destination.

At many different places along the highway, there are designated campsites. Each camping area offers different views and camping accommodations.

Whether you are passing through or staying to enjoy the natural beauty of the highway, there are ways to prepare for the trip across the top of the world.

How do you prepare for a trip on Top of the World Highway?

Taking a trip on the Top of the World Highway takes some planning and preparation. For one thing, the highway is mostly unpaved. Because the road is not paved, there are some concerns about driveability.

Travelers have noted potholes and little or no shoulder. This can make driving the highway tricker in the best weather conditions. Throw in the chance of heavy rain or snowfall, and the driving conditions get even worse.

So before you take your trip to the top of the world, follow these tips and your trip will be much more successful and a lot more enjoyable.

#1 – Prepare for the Border Crossing

Remember the Top of the World Highway crosses into another country. This means if you are taking the road that far, you need to be prepared for that crossing.

Personally, to cross the border between the United States and Canada, you will need your ID or a valid passport. Double-check that you have your identification and make sure it is easily accessible.

You’ll also need an I-94 form to cross the border. This form can be printed off and completed before you arrive, and that’s the best way to go about it. Again, make sure the I-94 is easily accessible.

You also need to plan the time of your crossing. The border isn’t open 24/7. In fact, the border in this area is only open a few months of the year and only open between 8 am and 6 pm (Alaska time). If you are returning from Canada, you’ll also need to remember there is an hour difference at the border. Plan accordingly.

But that’s not all. If you are crossing the border, you’ll need to double-check anything you’ve packed. There are certain items that you cannot bring across the border. For example, you can’t bring firearms or fresh produce.

#2 – Know When to Use the Ferry

If your trip is taking you through Dawson City, then you’ll need to prepare for the George Black Ferry. This ferry crosses the Yukon River, and there isn’t another option.

The good news is, the George Black Ferry is a free service that runs 24 hours a day but only 6 days a week. On Friday morning, the ferry is serviced between 5 am and 7 am. But that is the only time it’s not operational.

#3 – Check the Weather Before You Leave

Perhaps the most important step in preparation for the Top of the World Highway is checking the weather. You’ll want to make sure conditions on the road are the best possible.

Make sure there isn’t heavy rain or fog in the forecast before setting off. These conditions will make driving the Top of the World Highway even more treacherous. If rain or heavy fog is in the area, consider traveling on a different day.

#4 – Drive During the Day Only

Remember driving the Top of the World Highway is completely possible, people do it every day during the summer. But it’s best to travel only during the daylight hours. Any driving at night can be very dangerous.

#5 – Make Sure Your Car Is Fully-Loaded

Once the weather is clear and you’ve made sure all important documentation is stowed away, it’s time to make sure the car is ready to go.

First, make sure the car you are taking is in good working order. If possible, have a qualified mechanic look over the car. Make sure they check the brakes and all fluids.

Next, you’ll want to make sure you have a spare tire and tire repair kit in the car. Make sure the spare tire is in good condition.

You’ll want to make sure you have an updated map of the area. There is little to no cellphone reception along the highway, so you want to make sure you have a way to track your progress along the route.

Before you set off, make sure your gas tank is full. There is only one gas station between Dawson City and Tok, so it’s not a good idea to risk low fuel.

And finally, pack some water and non-produce snacks. It’s a long trip and there are few stops along the way. Not only will you want to be prepared for a growling stomach, but you’ll also want to be prepared for an emergency.

Alaska’s Driving Laws

Each and every state in the U.S. has its own unique driving laws. For those traveling the Top of the World Highway who aren’t Alaskan residents, you’ll want to make yourself familiar with those laws. Not only will you want to be safe while driving, but you’ll also want to stay on the right side of the law.

Driving the Top of the World Highway is something completely unique to Alaska and the Yukon. It’s an experience like driving the legendary Alaska Highway. If you have the opportunity, it’s not something to miss, but you’ll want to make sure you’re completely prepared first.
